What is Metro Ethernet (or MetroE)?

Metro Ethernet is a WAN service deployed over a metropolitan area. The service provider extends Ethernet over fiber optics to a customers building, and the customer connects the cable to their LAN switch or router. The service provider can offer the customer either fastethernet or gigabit ethernet speed. The customer can order whatever bandwidth they want to, from 10 Mbps to 1 gigabit ethernet speeds. This is a cost saving to the customer as well as increased simplicity without transferring protocols back and forth.

Metro ethernet is flexible because if your business needs more bandwidth than a T1, but not as much as a DS3, metro area ethernet allows you to order in 1 Mbps increments. Metro area ethernet is also perfect for providing the bandwidth needed if your business is using voip, ip cameras, large file sharing, or managed services.
Ethernet is well known, connecting virtually all networking equipment. This makes the ethernet interface inexpensive. Ethernet also makes it easy to connect several locations through a vpn. The Metro Ethernet Forum defines two types of ethernet connections, point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint. The Metro Ethernet Forum describes metro ethernet as having five main attributes: standardized service, quality of service, service mangagement, reliability, and scalability. Some of the top market sectors that can utilized metro ethernet are healthcare, finance, education, government, and media. Principal applications for a metro ethernet connection are site-to-site access, server consolidation, business continuity, disaster recovery, internet access, and converged networking.br>

Metro Ethernet and Fiber Optics

Metro Ethernet is the closest thing to plugging straight into the carriers network, through the use of fiber optics.  Fiber optics are an advantage over traditional copper connections associated with serial interfaces because fiber is able to transmit higher bandwidth over longer distances without signal degradation.  This is because single-mode fiber that is used overcomes many of the drawbacks of copper medium, such as electro-magnetic interference.

Fiber optics are more expensive, however, not only for the cable, but also for the equipment interfaces.  That is why metro ethernet over fiber is not everywhere yet.  It takes time to build out the network, but the footprint is growing. What about ethernet over copper (oec)? If metro ethernet runs over fiber optic lines, then why would I would it also be availabe over copper? Since fiber optics don't yet run up to every business, but there are current exixting copper lines. This enables an ethernet connection. Is there a drawback? Yes, speeds won't be as high. Ethernet over copper may only be up to 10 Mbps. Ethernet over serial may have a higher rate, but not the same as fiber optics. Some of the metro ethernet service providers that also offer ethernet over copper are XO, Mosaic Networks, and Quest.

 T1 Basics for Business

What is a T1 Line?

The first thing about a T1 line is that it is a business service, not residential. This is simply a matter of cost. While a T1 can offer an advantageous and economical way to bundle voice and data services for your business, the average household doesn’t use enough bandwidth to justify the cost. There are other alternatives that are more appropriate for residential or for a household business.

A T1 line is a dedicated circuit for your business that can provide voice (a phone line), data (internet access), or video (video conferencing), either as separate services or altogether. As mentioned, this can open up considerable savings as well as increasing productivity. Lets take a look at how this is done.

The foundation of a T1 is a four-wire digital circuit that carries 24 channels, each at the speed of 64 KBPS. This may not sound fast, but the combined effect is a speed of 1.544 MBPS!
